Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Will Oldham’s music stands apart—unflinchingly honest, enigmatic, and unafraid of darkness. His albums are filled with loamy soil, frozen earth, silent woods, and grass trammeled from dancing. There’s no shortage of shadows and hidden corners to explore, especially in his earlier work. But there is a lot of joy here too; songs that are vibrant and loving but never campy or trite.
Since 1998, he’s been recording under the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Good starting points are 2010’s The Wonder Show of the World (with The Cairo Gang), 2008’s Lie Down in the Light, 2006’s The Letting Go, and 2005’s Superwolf (with Matt Sweeney).
